Class Descriptions

Pre-service

This course is designed to address many of the Pre-Service level requirements for direct support staff and their supervisors. The module is divided into three sections with a written competency following each section. These sections are Advocacy & Rights, Communication and Behavior, and Person-Centered Planning.

All staff and contractors defined as direct support providers by the Medicaid Waiver standards are required to take this class within thirty (30) days of their contract date.

Foundations for Health and Wellness

Foundation for Health and Wellness provides basic information on health topics such as emergency, acute and health maintenance situations; observing for medication effects; specialized diets; aspiration, medical emergency response plans; dental care; seating and positioning; seizure intervention; and promoting health of individuals receiving services.

Special Note: This class requires the use of the internet on your own personal time prior to attending the in-class portion.  In order to complete the internet portion, participants must register with Alta Mira and will then receive an email with a link to complete the at-home training.

All staff and contractors defined as direct support providers by the Medicaid Waiver standards are required to take this class within thirty (30) days of their contract date.

American Heart Association - First Aid/CPR

First Aid is the initial care given to someone who is injured or suddenly becomes ill before more advanced medical care arrives. The goal of this course is to expose you to some realistic emergencies, and give you the knowledge and skills needed to respond safely and effectively.

All staff and contractors defined as direct support providers by the Medicaid Waiver standards are required to take this class within ninety (90) days of their contract date.    

The price of this class is $30.00.

Assisting with Medication Delivery (AWMD)

This two-day Assisting with Medication Delivery course provides basic information about medication (including medication names, formulations, how medications can affect the body, etc.), levels of assistance with medication, proper procedures for assisting with medication, teaching/support techniques, and observation/reporting/documentation procedures.

All staff and contractors defined as direct support providers by the Medicaid Waiver standards are required to take this class within thirty (90) days of their contract date or within thirty (30) days of working with an individual that requires the use of ANY medication.  Service providers must recertify annually.

Assisting with Medication Delivery (AWMD) - RECERTIFICATION

This one-day Assisting with Medication Delivery – Recertification course provides information about levels of assistance with medication, proper procedures for assisting with medication, teaching/support techniques, and observation/reporting/documentation procedures.

All staff and contractors defined as direct support providers by the Medicaid Waiver standards are required to take this class within one year of taking the 2-day AWMD course.  Service providers must recertify annually.

The price of this class is $20.00.

Participatory Communication and Choice-Making (PCCM)

Participatory Communication and Choice-Making provides practical information about how to effectively support individuals with communication challenges (and other assistive technology needs), identify appropriate supports, access resources and fully integrate supports into both the ISP document and all appropriate environments and routines desired by the individual. The module covers environmental supports, positioning, and assistive technologies that enhance and increase opportunities for communication and participation in the normal routines and rhythms of daily life. The participatory approach is defined and explained with a focus on application.

All staff and contractors defined as direct support providers by the Medicaid Waiver standards are required to take this class within one year of their hire date.

Advocacy 101

Advocacy 101 provides information about effective advocacy for individuals receiving services, including strategies for promoting self-advocacy. The module also addresses specific state rules and regulations pertaining to individuals with developmental disabilities who live in New Mexico, explaining rights and responsibilities to individuals, supporting individuals to make informed decisions including healthcare decisions, incident reporting requirements, and accessing technical assistance.

All staff and contractors defined as direct support providers by the Medicaid Waiver standards are required to take this class within one year of their contract date.

Positive Behavior Support Strategies

Positive Behavior Support Strategies provides information about positive behavior support philosophy, the holistic assessment process, the integration of behavioral therapy recommendations into the ISP, general behavior support strategies, and available resources for interdisciplinary teams.

All staff and contractors defined as direct support providers by the Medicaid Waiver standards are required to take this class within one year of their contract date.

Teaching and Supports Strategies

This training module introduces direct support staff and their supervisors to teaching methods and support strategies used for teaching skills. The teaching process is an important component of individualized service planning, and in assisting individuals with developmental disabilities to gain the skills needed to reach individual visions.

All staff and contractors defined as direct support providers by the Medicaid Waiver standards are required to take this class within one year of their contract date.

Handle with Care

Some individuals with positive behavior support plans (PBSP) and behavioral crisis intervention plans (BCIP) require additional support and guidance. Handle with Care training covers both verbal and physical de-escalation techniques based on recommendations from the interdisciplinary team (IDT). Note: Appropriate attire must be worn for this class. This includes, but is not limited to, clothing that you can move around in easily and gym shoes with laces. If these requirements are not met, you must reschedule and attend class at a later date.

The price of this class is $50.00.

Person-Centered Planning

Participants in this one-day course will receive basic knowledge about ways in which to support individuals with developmental disabilities. The course addresses the foundations and philosophies of Person-Centered Planning, including person-centered values, choice-making and ways to be an effective member of the Interdisciplinary Team (IDT). Participants will have the opportunity to review and develop strategies for Person-Centered Planning using an actual Individual Service Plan (ISP).

All staff and contractors defined as direct support providers by the Medicaid Waiver standards are required to take this class within ninety (90) days of their contract date.

Alta Mira Orientation

Alta Mira Orientation provides information about a variety of topics, including (but not limited to) the following: history of the DD Waiver; Alta Mira services and expectations; incident management; universal precautions; proper lifting; HIPAA guidelines; sexual harassment; fire extinguisher safety; and workplace violence.
