Class Descriptions

Pre-service

Participants in this one-day course will receive basic knowledge about ways in which to support individuals with developmental disabilities.  The course includes information about rights and advocacy, communication, behavioral supports and person-centered planning.  This class is designed to be the first DDSD course in a list of eight trainings required for all direct-care providers.

All staff and contractors defined as direct support providers by the Medicaid Waiver standards are required to take this class within thirty (30) days of their contract date.

Foundations for Health and Wellness

Participants in this one-day course will receive basic knowledge about ways in which to support individuals with developmental disabilities.  The course addresses a variety of health-related topics and medical situations, including how to work with individuals who have specialized diets, aspiration issues, medical crisis plans, mealtime plans, seizure disorder, and various other medical concerns. 

Special Note: This class requires the use of the internet on your own personal time prior to attending the in-class portion.  In order to complete the internet portion, participants must register with Alta Mira and will then receive an email with a link to complete the at-home training.

All staff and contractors defined as direct support providers by the Medicaid Waiver standards are required to take this class within thirty (30) days of their contract date.

American Heart Association - First Aid/CPR

In this one-day course, participants will learn First Aid and Resuscitation skills for adult, children and infant victims.  Upon completion of class and demonstration of skills learned, participants will receive a two-year certification for First Aid and Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). All direct support staff and direct support contractors are required to take this class prior to their hire date and must recertify every two years.   Person Centered Planning (ISP)  Participants in this one-day course will receive basic knowledge about ways in which to support individuals with developmental disabilities.   The course addresses the foundations and philosophies of Person-Centered Planning, including person-centered values, choice-making and ways to be an effective member of the Interdisciplinary Team (IDT).  Participants will have the opportunity to review and develop strategies for Person-Centered Planning using an actual Individual Service Plan (ISP).

All staff and contractors defined as direct support providers by the Medicaid Waiver standards are required to take this class within ninety (90) days of their contract date.

Assisting with Medication Delivery (AWMD)

Participants in this two-day course will receive basic knowledge about ways in which to support individuals with developmental disabilities.   The course teaches participants various strategies to use while assisting the individuals that they support with medication.  They will also learn about pertinent medical issues, such as how medications interact with food, drugs and other medications.  In addition, the course addresses the required agency-specific medical paperwork and medication-related emergency procedures.

All staff and contractors defined as direct support providers by the Medicaid Waiver standards are required to take this class within thirty (90) days of their contract date or within thirty (30) days of working with an individual that requires the use of ANY medication.  Service providers must recertify annually.

Assisting with Medication Delivery (AWMD) - RECERTIFICATION

Participants in this one-day recertification course will receive basic knowledge about ways in which to support individuals with developmental disabilities.   The course is an annual overview of the two-day AWMD class and teaches participants various strategies to use while assisting the individuals that they support with medication.  Course content includes documentation demonstration of the required agency-specific medical paperwork as well as a refresher to the medication-related emergency procedure.

All staff and contractors defined as direct support providers by the Medicaid Waiver standards are required to take this class within one year of taking the 2-day AWMD course.  Service providers must recertify annually.

Participatory Communication and Choice-Making (PCCM)

Participants in this one-day course will receive basic knowledge about ways in which to support individuals with developmental disabilities.   The course addresses the foundations of communication, different communication and learning styles, working with communication devices and modifications, assistive technology and augmentative technology resources for individuals that communicate non-verbally.  Participants will also practice developing strategies for the individuals they support.

All staff and contractors defined as direct support providers by the Medicaid Waiver standards are required to take this class within one year of their hire date.

Advocacy 101

Participants in this one-day course will receive basic knowledge about ways in which to support individuals with developmental disabilities.   The course addresses the rights of individuals with developmental disabilities, advocacy, self-advocacy, how to support individuals to make informed decisions and how to access technical assistance.  It also includes ways to support a person who is having health issues.  The course specifically discusses guardianship, surrogate healthcare decision makers and Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) orders.

All staff and contractors defined as direct support providers by the Medicaid Waiver standards are required to take this class within one year of their contract date.

Positive Behavior Support Strategies

Participants in this one-day course will receive basic knowledge about ways in which to support individuals with developmental disabilities.   The course addresses the difference between behaviors and challenging behaviors, why certain behaviors surface, the importance of relationship building and the steps of crisis management.

All staff and contractors defined as direct support providers by the Medicaid Waiver standards are required to take this class within one year of their contract date.

Teaching and Supports Strategies

Participants in this one-day course will receive basic knowledge about ways in which to support individuals with developmental disabilities.  In this course, participants will learn to assist individuals they support to develop new abilities and increase current skills, how to utilize support strategies to teach the new skills and agency-specific documentation procedures.

All staff and contractors defined as direct support providers by the Medicaid Waiver standards are required to take this class within one year of their contract date.

Handle with Care

This one-day course is required for any Alta Mira contractor or direct-care provider that supports any individual with a behavioral crisis plan that includes the use of physical restraint techniques or is recommended by the Interdisciplinary Team (IDT).  This course is a version of the DDSD-approved crisis intervention management methods and demonstrates verbal and physical de-escalation techniques.

All staff and contractors defined as direct support providers by the Medicaid Waiver standards are required to take this class per the training requirements noted on the Individual-Specific Training (IST) portion of the individual’s Individual Service Plan (ISP) or within thirty (30) days of working with any individual that requires crisis intervention.  Service providers must recertify annually.  

Special Note:You must dress appropriately for class. This includes, but is not limited to, clothing that you can move around in easily and gym shoes with laces. If these requirements are not met, you must reschedule and attend class for a later date in order receive credit.

Person-Centered Planning

Participants in this one-day course will receive basic knowledge about ways in which to support individuals with developmental disabilities. $50 Training

Alta Mira Orientation

Participants in this one-day course will receive information about Alta Mira, our contracting requirements and an overview of the DD Waiver.   This course is an introductory course to the agency and relays all information pertinent to pending contractors and staff.  Topics that are discussed are the history of the waiver, Alta Mira services and expectations, Incident Management, Universal Precautions, proper lifting, HIPAA guidelines, sexual harassment laws, fire extinguisher safety and workplace violence. 

All direct support staff and direct support contractors are required to take this class prior to their hire date.  In order to attend Orientation, an application packet must be completed and turned in to the HR Department.
