Respite Care
Respite Care: Cognitive, Physical & Social Activities provided while the family caregiver gets a break.
Respite Care is one of Alta Mira’s Family Support Services (FSS). Respite is a flexible family support service that provides short-term, temporary care to individuals with Intellectual or Developmental Disabilities (IDD), allowing families and the primary caregiver time to take a break from daily caregiving. Respite, a period of rest, is designed to give the primary unpaid caregiver time away from the daily responsibility of caring for their loved one by supporting the person with IDD. This service is available to children and adults.
Services include assistance in activities of daily living (ADL), e.g., bathing, toileting, preparing or assisting with meal preparation and eating, creating opportunities for leisure, play, neighborhood and community involvement, and other recreational and social activities. Activities promote health and safety and provide opportunities for individuals to make their own choices about daily activities, enhancing self-help skills.
Through Respite Care, families are able to be part of the provider selection process that best suits their needs, including hiring family members or friends. Families and providers make decisions about where the respite care will be provided, which can include the individual’s/family’s home, respite care provider’s home, respite home, or a community setting of the family’s choice, such as a community center, park, or swimming pool.
